EDIT: Also getting really fucking sick of Photoshop not saving my colours properly--the border WAS the same colour as the dA background. :c}

And the colour looks the same to me... have you ever tried saving your picture as a transparent png?

hmm... it depends how you leaves the edges.
If they're cleanly cropped then they will be pixelly, but if you use a smooth/feather modify or a softer brush/eraser or something then they won't be.
